Insufficient exception handling in the method NCompress::NRar3::CDecoder::Code of 7-Zip before 18.00 and p7zip can lead to multiple memory corruptions within the PPMd code, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) or execute arbitrary code via a crafted RAR archive.
The bug was discovered 12/29/2017. The weakness was released 01/31/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at 0patch.blogspot.si. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-5996 since 01/22/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
