Linux Kernel 2.6.32 vzkernel open_by_handle_at access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.32 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function open_by_handle_at of the component vzkernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The open_by_handle_at function in vzkernel before 042stab090.5 in the OpenVZ modification for the Linux kernel 2.6.32, when using simfs, might allow local container users with CAP_DAC_READ_SEARCH capability to bypass an intended container protection mechanism and access arbitrary files on a filesystem via vectors related to use of the file_handle structure.

The bug was discovered 06/24/2014. The weakness was disclosed 02/01/2018 by Michal Grzedzicki (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-3519 since 05/14/2014. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 12/31/2019). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1318 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
