Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in PyCrypto up to 2.6.1. Affected is an unknown code block in the library lib/Crypto/PublicKey/ElGamal.py of the component ElGamal. The manipulation as part of a Parameter leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
lib/Crypto/PublicKey/ElGamal.py in PyCrypto through 2.6.1 generates weak ElGamal key parameters, which allows attackers to obtain sensitive information by reading ciphertext data (i.e., it does not have semantic security in face of a ciphertext-only attack). The Decisional Diffie-Hellman (DDH) assumption does not hold for PyCrypto's ElGamal implementation.
The bug was discovered 02/02/2018. The weakness was shared 02/03/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-6594 since 02/02/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106819 (Debian DLA-1283-2 : python-crypto security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197101 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Python-crypto Vulnerability (USN-3616-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
