Details
A vulnerability was found in jackson-databind up to 2.6.7.0/2.7.9.0/2.8.8 (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function readValue. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deserialization vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-502. The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently verifying that the resulting data will be valid. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A deserialization flaw was discovered in the jackson-databind, versions before 2.6.7.1, 2.7.9.1 and 2.8.9, which could allow an unauthenticated user to perform code execution by sending the maliciously crafted input to the readValue method of the ObjectMapper.
The bug was discovered 11/08/2017. The weakness was shared 02/06/2018 by Liao Xinxi (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-7525 since 04/05/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 102139 (RHEL 6 : JBoss EAP (RHSA-2017:1834)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370674 (Apache Struts Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities (S2-054,S2-055)).
Upgrading to version 2.6.7.1, 2.7.9.1 or 2.8.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (102139) and SecurityFocus (BID 99623†). The entries VDB-92217, VDB-92314, VDB-92773 and VDB-92782 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
