Details
A vulnerability has been found in CCN-lite up to 1.x and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function ndn_parse_sequence. The manipulation as part of a Variable leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow in the ndn_parse_sequence function in CCN-lite before 2.00 allows context-dependent attackers to have unspecified impact via vectors involving the typ and vallen variables.
The bug was discovered 08/08/2017. The weakness was released 02/07/2018 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-12470 since 08/04/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 183 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 2.00 eliminates this vulnerability.
