Cisco IOS/IOS XE Diagnostic Shell path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Cisco IOS and IOS XE and classified as critical. This affects an unknown part of the component Diagnostic Shell. Performing a manipulation results in path traversal. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-0123. The attack needs to be approached locally. There is no available exploit. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Cisco IOS and IOS XE (Router Operating System) (the affected version unknown). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown part of the component Diagnostic Shell. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

A Path Traversal vulnerability in the diagnostic shell for Cisco IOS and IOS XE Software could allow an authenticated, local attacker to use certain diagnostic shell commands that can overwrite system files. These system files may be sensitive and should not be able to be overwritten by a user of the diagnostic shell. The vulnerability is due to lack of proper input validation for certain diagnostic shell commands. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by authenticating to the device, entering the diagnostic shell, and providing crafted user input to commands at the local diagnostic shell CLI. Successful exploitation could allow the attacker to overwrite system files that should be restricted. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvg41950.

The bug was discovered 02/07/2018. The weakness was presented 02/08/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securitytracker.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-0123 since 11/27/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 107091 (Cisco IOS XE Software Diagnostic Shell Path Traversal Vulnerability (cisco-sa-20180207-ios)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 316189 (Cisco IOS and IOS XE Software IOS Diagnostic Shell Path Traversal Vulnerability (cisco-sa-20180207-ios)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (107091) and SecurityFocus (BID 102967†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
