A vulnerability was found in IBM WebSphere Application Server up to 6.1.0.42/7.0.0.20/8.0.0.1 (Application Server Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function javax.naming.directory.AttributeInUseException of the component Virtual Member Manager. The javax.naming.directory.AttributeInUseException class in the Virtual Member Manager in IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS) 6.1 before 6.1.0.43, 7.0 before 7.0.0.21, and 8.0 before 8.0.0.2 does not properly update passwords on a configuration using Tivoli Directory Server, which might allow remote attackers to gain access to an application by leveraging knowledge of an old password. IBM X-Force ID: 72581.
The bug was discovered 12/23/2011. The weakness was disclosed 02/08/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at exchange.xforce.ibmcloud.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-4889 since 12/22/2011. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1211 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 87 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
