Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 3.12 (Operating System). This affects the function aac_compat_do_ioctl of the file drivers/scsi/aacraid/linit.c of the component Adaptec RAID Controller Support. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The aac_compat_ioctl function in drivers/scsi/aacraid/linit.c in the Linux kernel before 3.11.8 does not require the CAP_SYS_RAWIO capability, which allows local users to bypass intended access restrictions via a crafted ioctl call.
The weakness was presented 10/30/2013 by Fabian Yamaguchi and Nico Golde as Linux kernel CVE fixes as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Linux. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-6383 since 11/04/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73961 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2014-3023)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156798 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Kernel (ELSA-2014-0285)).
Applying the patch aacraid: missing capable() check in compat ioctl is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (73961), SecurityFocus (BID 63888†), OSVDB (100292†), Secunia (SA55562†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42367†).
