A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Edge and ChakraCore (Web Browser) (affected version not known). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Scripting Engine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The bug was discovered 02/13/2018. The weakness was disclosed 02/13/2018 by lokihardt with Google Project Zero as confirmed security update guide (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-0860 since 12/01/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that the scripting engine handles objects in memory in Microsoft Edge. The vulnerability could corrupt memory in such a way that an attacker could execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could take control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106795 (KB4074588: Windows 10 Version 1709 and Windows Server Version 1709 February 2018 Security Update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91431 (Microsoft Edge Security Update for February 2018).
