A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in systemd up to 233. Affected is an unknown part of the component Mount Handler. The manipulation as part of a Request leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. In systemd prior to 234 a race condition exists between .mount and .automount units such that automount requests from kernel may not be serviced by systemd resulting in kernel holding the mountpoint and any processes that try to use said mount will hang. A race condition like this may lead to denial of service, until mount points are unmounted.

The bug was discovered 01/19/2018. The weakness was presented 02/16/2018 by Jann Horn with Google Project Zero as Bug 1534701 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-1049 since 12/04/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106553 (RHEL 7 : systemd (RHSA-2018:0260)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197044 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Systemd Vulnerabilities (USN-3558-1)).

Upgrading to version 234 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
