Details
A vulnerability was found in Leptonica up to 1.75.2 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function fscanf/sscanf of the component Format Handler. The manipulation of the argument %s as part of a Long String leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Leptonica before 1.75.3 does not limit the number of characters in a %s format argument to fscanf or sscanf, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack-based buffer overflow) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a long string, as demonstrated by the gplotRead and ptaReadStream functions.
The bug was discovered 02/16/2018. The weakness was presented 02/16/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-7186 since 02/16/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
