Details
A vulnerability was found in APNGDis up to 2.8. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component IHDR Chunk Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in APNGDis 2.8 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted image containing a malformed image size descriptor in the IHDR chunk.
The bug was discovered 03/14/2017. The weakness was presented 02/20/2018 as EDB-ID 41669 as confirmed exploit (Exploit-DB). It is possible to read the advisory at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-6193 since 02/22/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Alwin Peppels and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 343 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (41669) and SecurityFocus (BID 97053†). See VDB-98472 and VDB-113622 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
