NVIDIA Graphics Drivers 331.17/319.60/304.108 Privileges privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in NVIDIA Graphics Drivers 331.17/319.60/304.108 (Hardware Driver Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Privileges. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Unspecified vulnerability in NVIDIA graphics driver Release 331, 325, 319, 310, and 304 allows local users to bypass intended access restrictions for the GPU and gain privileges via unknown vectors.

The weakness was presented 12/03/2013 by Marcin Koscielnicki with X.org Team as 3377 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at nvidia.custhelp.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-5987 since 10/02/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72484 (NVIDIA Graphics Driver Unspecified Privilege Escalation (Unix / Linux)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121815 (Apple Mac OS X v10.9.2 and Security Update 2014-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2014-02-25-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89440), Tenable (72484), SecurityFocus (BID 64525†), OSVDB (100517†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42860†). See VDB-12058 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
