Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file epan/dissectors/packet-wccp.c of the component Dissector. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In Wireshark 2.4.0 to 2.4.4 and 2.2.0 to 2.2.12, epan/dissectors/packet-wccp.c had a large loop that was addressed by ensuring that a calculated length was monotonically increasing.
The bug was discovered 02/22/2018. The weakness was released 02/23/2018 as Bug 14412 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-7323 since 02/22/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 107093 (Wireshark 2.2.x < 2.2.13 / 2.4.x < 2.4.5 Multiple DoS Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371113 (F5 BIG-IP ASM and LTM Multiple Wireshark Vulnerabilities (K34035645)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
