Details
A vulnerability was found in Leptonica up to 1.75.3. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function gplotMakeOutput. The manipulation of the argument rootname with the input value / leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in Leptonica through 1.75.3. The gplotMakeOutput function does not block '/' characters in the gplot rootname argument, potentially leading to path traversal and arbitrary file overwrite.
The bug was discovered 02/15/2018. The weakness was published 02/23/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.debian.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-7442 since 02/23/2018.
