Details
A vulnerability has been found in FasterXML jackson-databind up to 2.8.11.0/2.9.4 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function readValue of the component JSON Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a incomplete blacklist vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-184. The product implements a protection mechanism that relies on a list of inputs (or properties of inputs) that are not allowed by policy or otherwise require other action to neutralize before additional processing takes place, but the list is incomplete, leading to resultant weaknesses. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
FasterXML jackson-databind before 2.8.11.1 and 2.9.x before 2.9.5 allows unauthenticated remote code execution because of an incomplete fix for the CVE-2017-7525 deserialization flaw. This is exploitable by sending maliciously crafted JSON input to the readValue method of the ObjectMapper, bypassing a blacklist that is ineffective if the c3p0 libraries are available in the classpath.
The bug was discovered 02/26/2018. The weakness was published 02/26/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-7489 since 02/26/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1562.006 for this issue.
