Xen up to 4.10.x L3-L4 Pagetable Free resource consumption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Xen up to 4.10.x (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component L3-L4 Pagetable Free Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered in Xen through 4.10.x allowing x86 PV guest OS users to cause a denial of service (host OS CPU hang) via non-preemptable L3/L4 pagetable freeing.

The bug was discovered 02/27/2018. The weakness was presented 02/27/2018 by Jann Horn with Google Project Zero as XSA-252 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is available at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-7540 since 02/27/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 107097 (Xen guest_remove_page() Function Pagetable Unpinning Handling Guest-to-host DoS (XSA-252)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 390158 (Oracle VM Server for x86 Security Update for xen (OVMSA-2018-0272)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
