A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (version now known). This issue affects the function load_multiboot of the file hw/i386/multiboot.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The load_multiboot function in hw/i386/multiboot.c in Quick Emulator (aka QEMU) allows local guest OS users to execute arbitrary code on the QEMU host via a mh_load_end_addr value greater than mh_bss_end_addr, which triggers an out-of-bounds read or write memory access.
The bug was discovered 02/27/2018. The weakness was disclosed 03/01/2018 with CERT (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-7550 since 02/27/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 108576 (openSUSE Security Update : qemu (openSUSE-2018-291) (Spectre)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171522 (OpenSUSE Security Update for qemu (openSUSE-SU-2018:2402-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
