Details
A vulnerability was found in Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.327/11.9.900.152 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Type Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Adobe Flash Player before 11.7.700.257 and 11.8.x and 11.9.x before 11.9.900.170 on Windows and Mac OS X and before 11.2.202.332 on Linux, Adobe AIR before 3.9.0.1380, Adobe AIR SDK before 3.9.0.1380, and Adobe AIR SDK & Compiler before 3.9.0.1380 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted .swf content that leverages an unspecified "type confusion," as exploited in the wild in December 2013.
The weakness was presented 12/10/2013 by David D. Rude II with iDEFENSE Labs as APSB13-28 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at helpx.adobe.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-5331 since 08/20/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 07/13/2024). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published 5 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as attacked. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71352 (Adobe AIR for Mac <= 3.9.0.1210 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB13-28)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122015 (Red Hat Update for flash-plugin (RHSA-2013:1818)).
Upgrading to version 11.9.900.170 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13906.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (33095), Zero-Day.cz (345), Tenable (71352), SecurityFocus (BID 64199†) and OSVDB (100774†). See VDB-11429 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
