Red Hat WildFly prior 11.0.0.Beta1 Undertow readValue TCP Connection resource consumption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Red Hat WildFly and classified as problematic. Impacted is the function readValue of the component Undertow. The manipulation as part of TCP Connection leads to resource consumption. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2016-9589. The attack may be initiated remotely. There is no available exploit. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Red Hat WildFly (Application Server Software). This issue affects the function readValue of the component Undertow. The manipulation as part of a TCP Connection leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Undertow in Red Hat wildfly before version 11.0.0.Beta1 is vulnerable to a resource exhaustion resulting in a denial of service. Undertow keeps a cache of seen HTTP headers in persistent connections. It was found that this cache can easily exploited to fill memory with garbage, up to "max-headers" (default 200) * "max-header-size" (default 1MB) per active TCP connection.

The bug was discovered 03/22/2017. The weakness was presented 03/12/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at rhn.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-9589 since 11/23/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 266 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105268 (RHEL 6 : JBoss EAP (RHSA-2017:3454)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236580 (Red Hat Update for JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 7.1.0 (RHSA-2017:3455)).

Upgrading to version 11.0.0.Beta1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (105268) and SecurityFocus (BID 97060†). See VDB-92173, VDB-92175, VDB-92322 and VDB-95800 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
