The verify_certificate function in lib/vtls/schannel.c in libcurl 7.30.0 through 7.51.0, when built for Windows CE using the schannel TLS backend, makes it easier for remote attackers to conduct man-in-the-middle attacks via a crafted wildcard SAN in a server certificate, as demonstrated by "*.com."

The bug was discovered 12/21/2016. The weakness was published 03/12/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at curl.haxx.se. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-9952 since 12/15/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
