Details
A vulnerability was found in Samba up to 4.4.10/4.5.6/4.6.0 (File Transfer Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Samba before versions 4.6.1, 4.5.7 and 4.4.11 are vulnerable to a malicious client using a symlink race to allow access to areas of the server file system not exported under the share definition.
The bug was discovered 03/23/2017. The weakness was shared 03/12/2018 as Bug 1429472 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-2619 since 12/01/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 60 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100346 (RHEL 7 : samba (RHSA-2017:1265)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157509 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for samba (ELSA-2017-1950)).
