A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003/XP (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Stack-based buffer overflow in the LRPC client in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3 and Server 2003 SP2 allows local users to gain privileges by operating an LRPC server that sends a crafted LPC port message, aka "LRPC Client Buffer Overrun Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 12/10/2013 by Renguang Yuan with Qihoo 360 Security Center as MS13-102 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-3878 since 06/03/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/25/2024).
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71317 (MS13-102: Vulnerability in LRPC Client Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2898715)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90930 (Microsoft Windows LRPC Client Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (MS13-102)).
Applying the patch KB2898715 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
