It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 4.x (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component 32-bit Syscall Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability (Kernel Memory). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A flaw was found in the Linux 4.x kernel's implementation of 32-bit syscall interface for bridging. This allowed a privileged user to arbitrarily write to a limited range of kernel memory.
The bug was discovered 03/16/2018. The weakness was presented 03/16/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at marc.info. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-1068 since 12/04/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109254 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:1005-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237034 (Red Hat Update for kernel-alt (RHSA-2018:2948)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (109254), SecurityFocus (BID 103459†) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2022-0532).
