Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.12 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the file fs/f2fs/segment.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
fs/f2fs/segment.c in the Linux kernel before 4.13 allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and panic) by using a noflush_merge option that triggers a NULL value for a flush_cmd_control data structure.
The bug was discovered 06/01/2017. The weakness was published 03/21/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-18241 since 03/21/2018. The attack needs to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 293 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109518 (Debian DSA-4188-1 : linux - security update (Spectre)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197394 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux, Linux-aws, Linux-kvm, Linux-raspi2, Linux-snapdragon Vulnerabilities (USN-3910-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.13 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
