Details
A vulnerability was found in Dell EMC iDRAC7 and iDRAC8 up to 2.52. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Dell EMC iDRAC7/iDRAC8, versions prior to 2.52.52.52, contain CGI injection vulnerability which could be used to execute remote code. A remote unauthenticated attacker may potentially be able to use CGI variables to execute remote code.
The bug was discovered 03/20/2018. The weakness was published 03/23/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at en.community.dell.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-1207 since 12/06/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1055 for this issue.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109208 (Dell iDRAC Products Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mar 2018)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11949 (Dell EMC iDRAC7/iDRAC8 Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.52.52.52 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (52246), Tenable (109208) and SecurityFocus (BID 103694†). Similar entry is available at VDB-114946. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
