Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.13.4 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function flush_tmregs_to_thread of the file arch/powerpc/kernel/ptrace.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the flush_tmregs_to_thread function in arch/powerpc/kernel/ptrace.c in the Linux kernel before 4.13.5, a guest kernel crash can be triggered from unprivileged userspace during a core dump on a POWER host due to a missing processor feature check and an erroneous use of transactional memory (TM) instructions in the core dump path, leading to a denial of service.
The bug was discovered 03/19/2018. The weakness was shared 03/27/2018 with Qihoo 360 Vulcan Team as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-1091 since 12/04/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109103 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-2018-377)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351257 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2018-1023).
Upgrading to version 4.13.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (109103) and SecurityFocus (BID 103603†). The entries VDB-109965, VDB-110554, VDB-111442 and VDB-113070 are related to this item. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
