Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Cisco IOS and IOS XE (Router Operating System) (version unknown). This issue affects an unknown function of the component QoS. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A vulnerability in the quality of service (QoS) subsystem of Cisco IOS Software and Cisco IOS XE Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition or execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. The vulnerability is due to incorrect bounds checking of certain values in packets that are destined for UDP port 18999 of an affected device. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending malicious packets to an affected device. When the packets are processed, an exploitable buffer overflow condition may occur. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected device with elevated privileges. The attacker could also leverage this vulnerability to cause the device to reload, causing a temporary DoS condition while the device is reloading. The malicious packets must be destined to and processed by an affected device. Traffic transiting a device will not trigger the vulnerability. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvf73881.
The bug was discovered 03/28/2018. The weakness was disclosed 03/28/2018 as cisco-sa-20180328-qos as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at tools.cisco.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-0151 since 11/27/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/27/2025).
It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 108720 (Cisco IOS Software Quality of Service Remote Code Execution Vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
