A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in libvirt up to 4.1.x (Virtualization Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Incomplete Fix CVE-2018-5748. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. libvirt version before 4.2.0-rc1 is vulnerable to a resource exhaustion as a result of an incomplete fix for CVE-2018-5748 that affects QEMU monitor but now also triggered via QEMU guest agent.
The bug was discovered 03/01/2018. The weakness was presented 03/28/2018 by Jann Horn (Mike) with Google Project Zero as Bug 1550672 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-1064 since 12/04/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 27 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 110706 (Oracle Linux 6 : libvirt (ELSA-2018-1929)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197168 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Libvirt Vulnerability And Update (USN-3680-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.2.0-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
