Google Android wma_peer_info_event_handler integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Google Android (Smartphone Operating System) (affected version not known) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function wma_peer_info_event_handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In wma_peer_info_event_handler() in Android for MSM, Firefox OS for MSM, and QRD Android before 2017-10-03, the value of num_peers received from firmware is not properly validated so that an integer overflow vulnerability in the size of a buffer allocation may potentially lead to a buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 02/05/2018. The weakness was published 03/30/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at source.android.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-17766 since 12/19/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/24/2023). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 53 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
