WebKit, as used in Apple Safari before 6.1.1 and 7.x before 7.0.1, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than other WebKit CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2013-12-16-1.
The weakness was disclosed 12/16/2013 by Keen Team with Zero Day Initiative as HT6082 as confirmed advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-5228 since 08/15/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72962 (Apple TV < 6.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122790 (Apple iTunes Prior to 12.0.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (HT6537)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13362.
