Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.15.15 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ext4_iget of the file fs/ext4/inode.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
The ext4_iget function in fs/ext4/inode.c in the Linux kernel through 4.15.15 mishandles the case of a root directory with a zero i_links_count, which allows attackers to cause a denial of service (ext4_process_freed_data NULL pointer dereference and OOPS) via a crafted ext4 image.
The bug was discovered 03/26/2018. The weakness was released 04/02/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-1092 since 12/04/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109518 (Debian DSA-4188-1 : linux - security update (Spectre)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237034 (Red Hat Update for kernel-alt (RHSA-2018:2948)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (109518), SecurityFocus (BID 103774†) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2022-0532).
