Apple watchOS up to 4.1 WebKit redirect

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple watchOS up to 4.1 (Smartwatch Operating System). This affects an unknown function of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a redirect vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-601. A web application accepts a user-controlled input that specifies a link to an external site, and uses that link in a Redirect. This simplifies phishing attacks. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in certain Apple products. iOS before 11.2 is affected. Safari before 11.0.2 is affected. iCloud before 7.2 on Windows is affected. iTunes before 12.7.2 on Windows is affected. tvOS before 11.2 is affected. watchOS before 4.2 is affected. The issue involves the "WebKit" component. It allows remote attackers to spoof user-interface information (about whether the entire content is derived from a valid TLS session) via a crafted web site that sends a 401 Unauthorized redirect.

The bug was discovered 01/11/2018. The weakness was published 04/03/2018 by Jeonghoon Shin (OSS-Fuzz) with Theori (Website). The advisory is shared at usn.ubuntu.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-7153 since 03/17/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1204.001 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 22 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106594 (Fedora 26 : webkitgtk4 (2018-43712163de)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171677 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for webkit2gtk3 (SUSE-SU-2018:3387-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (106594) and SecurityFocus (BID 102775†). Similar entries are available at VDB-110748, VDB-110749, VDB-110750 and VDB-110751. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
