A vulnerability was found in libxml2 2.9.8 (Document Processing Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function xz_decomp in the library xzlib.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. The xz_decomp function in xzlib.c in libxml2 2.9.8, if --with-lzma is used, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a crafted XML file that triggers LZMA_MEMLIMIT_ERROR, as demonstrated by xmllint, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-8035.
The bug was discovered 04/03/2018. The weakness was released 04/04/2018 by Gustavo Grieco (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.gnome.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-9251 since 04/03/2018. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely.
