Details
A vulnerability has been found in Synology DiskStation Manager 4.3-3810 (Network Attached Storage Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the file webapi/FileStation/file_share.cgi. The manipulation of the argument folder_path with the input value /test/../../tmp leads to a path traversal vulnerability (File Listing). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in the FileBrowser components in Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) before 4.3-3810 Update 3 allow remote attackers to read, write, and delete arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the (1) path parameter to file_delete.cgi or (2) folder_path parameter to file_share.cgi in webapi/FileStation/; (3) dlink parameter to fbdownload/; or unspecified parameters to (4) html5_upload.cgi, (5) file_download.cgi, (6) file_sharing.cgi, (7) file_MVCP.cgi, or (8) file_rename.cgi in webapi/FileStation/.
The weakness was shared 12/20/2013 by Andrea Fabrizi with andreafabrizi.it as Synology DSM multiple directory traversal as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-6987 since 12/06/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Andrea Fabrizi in HTTP Request and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72346 (Synology DiskStation Manager < 4.3-3810 Update 3 Multiple FileBrowser Component Directory Traversal Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The advisory illustrates:
The only countermeasure implemented against this vulnerability is the check that the path starts with a valid shared folder, so is enough to put the "../" straight after, to bypass the security check.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89892), Exploit-DB (30475), Tenable (72346), SecurityFocus (BID 64483†) and OSVDB (101266†). The entries VDB-11565, VDB-11566, VDB-11567 and VDB-11568 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
