Apache DriverHive JDBC Driver up to 2.3.2 Escape Argument sql injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apache DriverHive JDBC Driver up to 2.3.2 (Hardware Driver Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown part of the component Escape Handler. The manipulation as part of a Argument leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

This vulnerability in Apache Hive JDBC driver 0.7.1 to 2.3.2 allows carefully crafted arguments to be used to bypass the argument escaping/cleanup that JDBC driver does in PreparedStatement implementation.

The bug was discovered 04/04/2018. The weakness was released 04/05/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-1282 since 12/07/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/09/2021). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 103751†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
