Spring Framework up to 4.3.14/5.0.4 STOMP security check

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Spring Framework up to 4.3.14/5.0.4. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component STOMP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a security check vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-358. The product does not implement or incorrectly implements one or more security-relevant checks as specified by the design of a standardized algorithm, protocol, or technique. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Spring Framework, versions 5.0 prior to 5.0.5 and versions 4.3 prior to 4.3.15 and older unsupported versions, allow applications to expose STOMP over WebSocket endpoints with a simple, in-memory STOMP broker through the spring-messaging module. A malicious user (or attacker) can craft a message to the broker that can lead to a remote code execution attack.

The bug was discovered 04/05/2018. The weakness was released 04/06/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at pivotal.io. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-1270 since 12/06/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1211 for this issue.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370881 (Pivotal Spring Framework STOMP Messaging Remote Code Execution Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 4.3.15 or 5.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (44796) and SecurityFocus (BID 103696†).
