Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function ssl_get_algorithm2 of the file ssl/s3_lib.c of the component TLS Cipher Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The ssl_get_algorithm2 function in ssl/s3_lib.c in OpenSSL before 1.0.2 obtains a certain version number from an incorrect data structure, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via crafted traffic from a TLS 1.2 client.
The issue has been introduced in 03/29/2010. The weakness was published 12/14/2013 by Bryan Call as Use version in SSL_METHOD not SSL structure. as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.openssl.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-6449 since 11/04/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1356 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71602 (Fedora 19 : openssl-1.0.1e-36.fc19 (2013-23794)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350258 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for openssl: AL2012-2014-003).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.openssl.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13939.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (71602), SecurityFocus (BID 64530†), OSVDB (101347†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42769†). rt.openssl.org is providing further details.
