Juniper Junos up to 15.0 CLNP Datagram 7pk security

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Juniper Junos up to 15.0 (Router Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown function of the component CLNP Datagram Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a 7pk security vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-254. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Receipt of a specially crafted Connectionless Network Protocol (CLNP) datagram destined to an interface of a Junos OS device may result in a kernel crash or lead to remote code execution. Devices are only vulnerable to the specially crafted CLNP datagram if 'clns-routing' or ES-IS is explicitly configured. Devices with without CLNS enabled are not vulnerable to this issue. Devices with IS-IS configured on the interface are not vulnerable to this issue unless CLNS routing is also enabled. This issue only affects devices running Junos OS 15.1. Affected releases are Juniper Networks Junos OS: 15.1 versions prior to 15.1F5-S3, 15.1F6-S8, 15.1F7, 15.1R5; 15.1X49 versions prior to 15.1X49-D60; 15.1X53 versions prior to 15.1X53-D66, 15.1X53-D233, 15.1X53-D471. Earlier releases are unaffected by this vulnerability, and the issue has been resolved in Junos OS 16.1R1 and all subsequent releases.

The bug was discovered 04/11/2018. The weakness was presented 04/11/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kb.juniper.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-0016 since 11/16/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1211.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109210 (Juniper Junos Connectionless Network Protocol (CLNP) Packet Handling Unspecified Remote Code Execution / DoS (JSA10844)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Junos Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370885 (Juniper Junos OS Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (JSA10844)).

Upgrading to version 16.1R1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (109210) and SecurityFocus (BID 103747†). See VDB-116092, VDB-116090, VDB-116089 and VDB-116091 for similar entries. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
