A vulnerability was found in Nextend Twitter Connect Plugin up to 1.5.1 on WordPress (Social Network Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function new_Twitter_sign_button of the file nextend-Twitter-connect.php. The manipulation of the argument redirect_to as part of a Parameter leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-79. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the new_Twitter_sign_button function in nextend-Twitter-connect.php in the Nextend Twitter Connect plugin before 1.5.2 for WordPress allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the redirect_to parameter. NOTE: this may overlap CVE-2015-4413.
The bug was discovered 06/22/2015. The weakness was released 04/12/2018 by Liran Segal as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-4557 since 06/15/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is shared for download at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1025 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:nextend-Twitter-connect.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11486 (WordPress Nextend Twitter Connect and Nextend Google Connect Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 1.5.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
