Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.12 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function kernel_wait4 of the file kernel/exit.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The kernel_wait4 function in kernel/exit.c in the Linux kernel before 4.13, when an unspecified architecture and compiler is used, might allow local users to cause a denial of service by triggering an attempted use of the -INT_MIN value.
The bug was discovered 07/10/2017. The weakness was shared 04/13/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-10087 since 04/13/2018. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 277 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109758 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:1221-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171166 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:1366-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.13 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
