A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in WordPress up to 4.9.4 (Content Management System). Affected by this vulnerability is the function get_the_generator. Before WordPress 4.9.5, the version string was not escaped in the get_the_generator function, and could lead to XSS in a generator tag.
The bug was discovered 04/03/2018. The weakness was disclosed 04/16/2018 by Nitin Venkatesh (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at codex.wordpress.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-10102 since 04/14/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 154005 (WordPress Prior to 4.9.5 Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.7.26, 3.8.26, 3.9.24, 4.0.23, 4.1.23, 4.2.20, 4.3.16, 4.4.15, 4.5.14, 4.6.11, 4.7.10, 4.8.6 or 4.9.5 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (109407) and SecurityFocus (BID 103775†). The entries VDB-116225 and VDB-116226 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
