A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Appear TV XC5000 and XC5100 3.26.217. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Web Server. The manipulation with the input value /../../../../../../../../../../../../etc/passwd leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. On Appear TV XC5000 and XC5100 devices with firmware 3.26.217, it is possible to read OS files with a specially crafted HTTP request (such as GET /../../../../../../../../../../../../etc/passwd) to the web server (fuzzd/0.1.1) running the Maintenance Center on port TCP/8088. This can lead to full compromise of the device.
The bug was discovered 04/11/2018. The weakness was shared 04/17/2018 as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-7539 since 02/27/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
