Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.0.8/3.4.74/3.10.24/3.12.5 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function get_wchan of the file arch/arm/kernel/process.c of the component Stack Frame Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was released 08/28/2013 by ykrocku as unwind_frame cause a kernel paging error as not defined posting (Stack Overflow). The advisory is shared for download at stackoverflow.com. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. The attack needs to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by ykrocku in C and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at stackoverflow.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The code used by the exploit is:
frame->fp = *(unsigned long *)(fp - 12);
Upgrading to version 3.4.75, 3.10.25 or 3.12.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at OSVDB (101400†) and Secunia (SA56224†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
