Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FFmpeg 2.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected by this issue is the function iff_read_packet of the file libavformat/iff.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability.
The issue has been introduced in 10/29/2013. The weakness was presented 12/15/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as avformat/iff: fix memleak of packet as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.videolan.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 47 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at OSVDB (101464†). See VDB-11649, VDB-11647, VDB-11646 and VDB-11645 for similar entries. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
