Invincea-X 6.1.3-24058 SboxDrv.sys Kernel Memory race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Invincea-X 6.1.3-24058 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing in the library SboxDrv.sys. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability (Kernel Memory). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An exploitable double fetch vulnerability exists in the SboxDrv.sys driver functionality of Invincea-X 6.1.3-24058. A specially crafted input buffer and race condition can result in kernel memory corruption, which could result in privilege escalation. An attacker needs to execute a special application locally to trigger this vulnerability.

The bug was discovered 06/30/2017. The weakness was shared 04/24/2018 by Cisco with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-9038 since 10/26/2016. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 298 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 99360†). The entries VDB-117003 and VDB-117040 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
