A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FreeRDP 2.0.0-beta1+android11. This issue affects the function license_recv of the component Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-787. An exploitable code execution vulnerability exists in the authentication functionality of FreeRDP 2.0.0-beta1+android11. A specially crafted server response can cause an out-of-bounds write resulting in an exploitable condition. An attacker can compromise the server or use a man in the middle attack to trigger this vulnerability.
The bug was discovered 07/24/2017. The weakness was disclosed 04/24/2018 by Tyler Bohan with Cisco Talos (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-2834 since 12/01/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 40 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 102945 (openSUSE Security Update : freerdp (openSUSE-2017-992)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196871 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Freerdp Vulnerabilities (USN-3380-1)).
