Apache Tika up to 1.17 tika-server command injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apache Tika up to 1.17. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component tika-server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

From Apache Tika versions 1.7 to 1.17, clients could send carefully crafted headers to tika-server that could be used to inject commands into the command line of the server running tika-server. This vulnerability only affects those running tika-server on a server that is open to untrusted clients. The mitigation is to upgrade to Tika 1.18.

The weakness was published 04/25/2018 with Apache (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-1335 since 12/07/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1202 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by h00die/David Yesland/Tim Allison in Ruby/Metasploit and been published 2 years after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as attacked. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. A worm is spreading, which is automatically exploiting this vulnerability. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13440 (Apache Tika Remote Command Injection Vulnerability).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (47208) and SecurityFocus (BID 104001†). Similar entries are available at VDB-117117 and VDB-117116. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
