Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Python up to 2.4 (Programming Language Software). This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The SimpleXMLRPCServer library module in Python 2.2, 2.3 before 2.3.5, and 2.4, when used by XML-RPC servers that use the register_instance method to register an object without a _dispatch method, allows remote attackers to read or modify globals of the associated module, and possibly execute arbitrary code, via dotted attributes.
The bug was discovered 02/04/2005. The weakness was presented 02/04/2005 by Graham Dumpleton (Website). The advisory is shared at python.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-0089 since 01/18/2005. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16340 (Debian DSA-666-1 : python2.2 - design flaw), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at python.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
